Whew, today was busy BUSY.
After a late night, last night I woke up around about 11:30am and proceeded to get ready for the DC Countdown Panel that was going down at 12:30. The panel started and was as lively as the DC Nation Panel. The key pieces of news that came out of the panel were:
- Sinestro Corp – 1 Shot Special – IMPORTANT READ IT – My buddy Anti-Monitor is back. (I’ve seen the pages!)
- Simon Dark series by Steve Niles. Will be set in Gotham City. Think Kid Frankenstein but less hokey, more horror
- Karate Kid will be one of the main characters followed in Countdown
- Countdown to Adventure – Animal Man/ Starfire/ Adam Strange miniseries plus someone called Forerunner.
- Countdown to Mystery – Dr. Fate mini with Eclipso backup story
- New Infinity Inc series – Steel and company heading it up
- Crime Bible miniseries
- Suicide Squad Miniseries
- Dwanye McDuffie is taking over JLA from Brad Meltzer with issue #13
- Justice Society of America, Kingdom Come characters will show up with issue #10.
After the Countdown panel I headed for the convention floor. Originally I was gonna stay for the Occult Crimes Taskforce panel but I thought the comic was good and having already walked by Rosario Dawson a couple of times, I thought, eh, maybe next time. Pretty much the rest of the day I got stuff signed.
Ethan Van Sciver – Real down to Earth guy, was doing a crap load of sketches for people and even had a copy of Green Lantern: Sinestro Corp out for people to look at. Note: I may have joked that they used that title name as the answer for every question at the DC Panel….well I looked at it..and YEAH….the thing has MASSIVE implications for the DCU and according to a page I looked at specifically, the panel where John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, and Kyle Rayner are talking…”it’ll be the last time they are all together” I kid you not, these were Ethans’ exact words when I asked him. Feel bad for the guy he’s trying to avoid being type-casted as a villains artist, thus far he’s really been bugging DC staff to do some female characters more. Based on another panel of Sinestro Corp, with Supergirl in it, I’d say Ethan can draw the female figure pretty frelling well. Again cool guy, signed my stuff and I think I got around to wrangling an interview with him later on.
Matt Fraction – Same as Sciver, he loves the fans and is a regular joe. Got my Casanova signed and have no idea why I didn’t bring my Punisher: War Journals to get signed. Talked with everybody that had stuff for him to sign. Found out his wife is doing a 30 Days title with Steve Niles. Originally she was gonna be co-signing with him for that book I guess but, conventions being kinda humid and exhausting and her in the midst of a pregnancy, lol, not really conducive. Matt I doubt your reading this but I am hoping the best for you, your Wife, and your baby on the way, Henry the Baby Lawyer! (what?….HE’LL get it)
Jeff Parker- Mr. Agents of Atlas!!! Yes, I know he does other things, but that’s how I think of him as. All around regular joe, was doing sketches like crazy, just like Ethan. I saw this The Question sketch he did ….grr…me wanted to get it badly but, he was doing it for someone else.
Kris Justice – Sitting right by Jeff, he was the inker on Agents of Atlas. Very thick british accent, involved in another convo though, so I was not gonna bug him.
Pretty much around the time I finished getting stuff signed by Kris, the Marvel Roundtable panel was about ready to start. The biggest pieces of news I gathered from that were:
- Peter David – Will be taking over She-Hulk after #22. New cast of characters, set 3 months after last Slott’s issue
- More of Agents of Atlas? – May or may not. Sounds like a finite possibility.
- No mixing of X-Factor and She-Hulk. X-Factor will be more entrenched in mutant community stories.
- Messiah complex, Mutants (Endangered Species). The birth of a child with the mutant gene. Marauders. X-Men vs Marauders, everyone is trying to get this child found by Cerebro. Ole school crossover. Spread out over many titles. Story was written over a two day period already.(12 part series, over four titles, over 3 months.)
After this panel ended I was on a mission to find Roy Thomas and get my Conan signed. He proved ellusive however, as did Rick Remender of Fear Agent…I however did get a hold of….
Tony Moore – Does penciling for Fear Agent among other things. The guy seemed beat, simply put. Given how I feel after day 2 of this convention. I can’t say I blame the fellow. He was doing sketches from Walking Dead but….my funds had already been dwindling around this point..and I had to get one or two things for some people…so alas…just got some Fear Agent stuff signed….no sketches.
I tried looking for one or two more people but, wasn’t having any luck. I did finally refind Jennie Breedens’ booth though.
Jennie Breeden - Writes & draws a brillant and funny webcomic called Devils’ Panties. Jen for all intents and purposes is the sweetest webcomic gal I’ve met. She is indie in a way too, so I shelled out some money for three of her trades…and a gift for a friend. When asking if I could take a picture, she didn’t even want to know if I wanted to be in it, she just hoped the table and hugged me while another guy took the picture, she ohhh’ing at my digital camera.
Again, very sweet gal, I hope further success for her. (Sorry random guy made to take picture, lol.)
Eric Powell was sitting across from her, table pretty barren just kinda looking around for somebody to sign stuff. I kinda felt bad for the guy. was gonna go over and maybe get some more stuff signed but, by the time I got to his table, the sucker was gone. Just as well I suppose, Powell has enough on his plate with his personal titles and such.
As the convention came to an end I hopped on the web for a bit, checked email, read peoples journals, yadda yadda yadda, teased Ashlee on AIM a little about what I got her at Jeenie’s both
. Around about 6pm they started shoo’ing people out of the convention center though, so I split.
Got to the hotel, dropped my stuff off, and finally went to Fuel to pick up a calzone and sub. Jeenie was in line in front of me but I curbed the fan-boy urge, she’s got enough people freaking her out with that shit….and I was REALLY hungry.
On the way back into the hotel with my food, I saw Daniel Way pacing back and forth outside the hotel lobby, he seemed a tad jittery, I am guessing the fact that the hotel was smoke free might have had a little to do with it. Walking on the way to the elevator I saw Matt Fraction and Tony Moore talking…I don’t know why but, it just struck me as funny.
Anyway, here I sit now typing all of this, looking out over Charlotte as the sun starts to set and things wind down a bit. It’s kinda surreal running into all of these big names, seriously I passed by Rosario Dawson I don’t know HOW many times by accident, the same goes with the writers and artists, I’ve mentioned. HeroesCon I will honestly admit is more personal in scope then Wizard World Chicago, everybody eats at the same place and stays in the same place, it’s just…well it’s kinda cool, I don’t know of any more articulate way of saying it.
Whew, what a day, Glad tomorrow I just got three people left to sign stuff, after that I am going HOME!! (and likely gonna scream after seeing both my bank account and credit card bill). Till the day 3 post….cause I am hungry like a mofo and wanna eat that chicken calzone and sub NOW.
