Come ON!

Reviews for this week? A day after the comics have come out?

Yes…be afraid…I am actually…somewhat…timely. Dum dum DUMM!!!!

Ultimates 3 #1 – Well apparently a sex tape between Black Widow & Tony Stark got out and is all over the news, further compounding things, Venom busts in rampaging looking for a lady…of whom? we never find out. Janet Pym appears to be running the team now, and Cap is oddly distant throughout the book. The end of this issue has someone taking out the Scarlet Witch with an explosive and….well… THIS panel:

Ultimates 3 #1

Ok…my problem with this? You have a very dramatic scene of Pietro holding his dead sister and the first part my eye goes to, the part its drawn to, is Scarlet Witches’ arse cheek. Now I am a dude and generally don’t mind a decent amount of “cheesecake” shots but…COME ON….do we really need her butt highlighted as she lays dead in her brothers’ arms? Maybe I am overblowing things…maybe….but…I doubt it. It’s just unnecessary. The last thing the picture should highlight and say to the reader is…aww…Scarlet Witch is dead…but LOOK AT THAT BUTT!

Aside from the above panel, this issue was really good. Loeb writes a good first issue to Ultimates 3 rivaling the past work done on the series and the art by Joe Madureira & Christian Lichtner is a delight to look at as well.

Countdown to Final Crisis #21 – Things look to finally be wrapping up and coming together. Trickster is apparently dead, still chained to Piper. What could be worse? Apparently a fail-safe got switched when James died and now Piper has to break the chain before it detonates in 24 hrs…yeah…kinda sucks to be Piper right now. Holly & Harley are still going through grueling training on Amazonian Island (I know the actual name but, Amazonian Island is easier to spell), AND….oh yeah….a huge OMAC/Brother Eye-like machine has been activated, supposedly to take the infected Karate Kid out. Overall I am digging this series more now, the art is still meh to me but, it’s not awful and so long as the story stays within the two or three storylines it has been staying with…I’ll be good.

Justice Society of America #11- Kingdom Come Superman slowly starts adjusting to life on a new Earth, the new Judomaster is helped by the JSA, AND Mr. America is back…again…I am guessing with a longer life then the last one…what was it…like two or three issues the last guy lasted. Something ominous is going on as well…some person possibly becoming the “big bad”, if you’ll excuse the Buffy-ism. I got no clue who it is….other then it’s NOT Lex Luthor…that’d be WAY too obvious. Good issue.

Justice League of America #15 – It’s before the events of the Black Canary/Green Arrow Wedding…so yeah…LATE LATE LATE! I honestly forgot what was happening in this book it feels like it’s been forever since I last read it. Firestorm ends up saving the whole entire JLA by giving Batman a ballpoint pin…..no….really…he was gonna transmute it into a lockpick before coming to Superman’s rescue but, as Batman puts it so elequently:

Batman…yeah…he’s a bad ass

SOO. Everyone on the team is freed and an ALL OUT BRAWL ensues between the JLA and the Injustice League. Black Canary takes lead, getting flack in the end from both Amanda Waller AND Wonder Woman…yeah…whatever….YOU try leading a freaking team of heroes against some of the most heinous villains ever to come from the DCU.

Lots of good moments all throughout this issue.

Where’s the Flash Huh? Yeah that’s right!

Heh.

Robin #169 – Umm…good issue…but not a whole lot really went on. We see what happened to Talia/Robin/Damian/etc, after Ra’s and Batman left. Apparently the White Ghost said to heck with Ra’s and had his ninjas attack Robin. The end of this issue has Robin in the midst of a moral struggle, join Ra’s and possibly bring his loved ones back to life…or stay and fight with Batman and those who trust him. I liked this issue…didn’t love it as much as part four of The Ressurection of Ra’s Al Ghul, but….I liked it alright. The art in this issue was ok, it wasn’t horrible but, it wasn’t great.

Supergirl #24 – Puckett rehashes Kara’s origin in a way…now her father isn’t a psycho scientist, he’s a nice ranger. This issue was alright…I think Puckett mainly wrote this issue so as to kinda erase all the crap that had come before (Kandor in a bottle? Yeah…you know what I am talking about)…start from the beginning, from scratch so to speak. Honestly this issue I felt was a tad choppy in it’s overall writing…maybe I am being harsh but, that’s how it felt. I’ll give Puckett another issue but, I’ll only do it cause he made a great series out of Cassandra Cain..(speaking of….when we gonna get a little background on what the heck happened to Cassie Cain…huh, HUH? I am talking to you Didio! No jokey “in the Himalayas” answer this time….yeah yeah…I know read the Outsiders…grrr)

Countdown Arena #1 - Monarch captures a bunch of heroes as prisoners and makes them fight ala Thunderdome style. TWO heroes enter…ONE hero LEAVES. There…that’s the plot. Oh sure the different Supermen are trying to figure out how to foil Monarch but…in short, this title is about some heroes duking it out with other Earth versions of themselves. Some people will hate this title for it’s simplistic nature, others will like it. Personally, I kinda like this title, you have some battles going on…its not the best comic out now but, it’s not too bad, and I think cause it’s a weekly I am already locked down for the rest of the issues…so…either way I am along for the ride. I am not a fan of McDaniels’ style though. It’s not awful or anything…it just feels too cartoony to me. I wasn’t a fan of it either when he did Robin #146 and 147…it’s probably more my personal preference then anything.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #9

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #9 – Brian K. Vaughan + Faith = GOODNESS. Giles when he is in “Ripper” form…tis be perfection. Buffy fans know what I’m saying. If you were a fan of the tv show and for some unknown reason, have, as yet, NOT read this title yet…go ahead and do yourself a favor, pick up the singles or the current trade that is out. Seriously!

Well that’s it for tonight.

Maybe a Heroes Season 2 post tomorrow.
