I am not one that makes statements like this often. A “great issue” here, a “good” there, a dash of “oh it was decent” but, Best Comic I’ve EVER Read…no…this is different.
Let’s get to it…shall we.
First off, the writing, Geoff Johns I don’t know how you are able to write the way you do but, just when I get use to your style and know what to expect, you blow me away with writing that surpasses everything you’ve done.
This final issue to the Sinestro Corp War, explains just about EVERY DAMN THING you wanted to know from the start. What is the “darknest night” prophecy foretold of in the Book of Oa? The origins of all the colored lanterns? How did SB Prime end up still alive in that “other” title? Etc, etc. All of these things are told, are revealed and all in such a way, that adds so much to the overall tapestry of the story. You are not bogged down with the answers but are enriched by them.
In addition to finally answering questions that many of us have been INSANELY persistent about, Johns throws in large/huge/EPIC fights. Ivan Reis and Ethan Van Sciver…how you two ever kept the pace with Johns writing…in such beautifully vivid pencilwork throughout this issue…it’s beyond me…it’s herculean. I don’t care what people are gonna say about this issue being delayed…even with the extra time you had to do this issue, it’s still amazing and unbelievable.
Throughout all these battles you have high moment after high moment. Hal & Kyle go to Coast City to evacuate all citizens from a wave of Sinestro Corp guys oncoming. Hal trying to protect the only family he has left..worrying about them…trying to get them out…all the while in NY all of DC’s Heroes are fighting the onslaught from another Sinestro Corp army. The psychotic Superboy Prime causing destruction and chaos everywhere he flies, the Anti-Monitor looking to go all anti-matter wave “COI-style” on these punks.
Meanwhile back in Coast City, Hal’s family lets him know, they aren’t leaving, not because they are stubborn or insane but because they believe in Hal, have faith in him, and so does the rest of the city….I won’t lie…it’s a tearjerker..I had my moments…
I just…oh man there is just so much to like in this issue. Action, secrets revealed, the heroes laying some huge smackdowns, humor:
There is more…oh so much more…even after the intial “end” of this series…but…I don’t, NAY…WON’T spoil it anymore for you. (Except for this little page…sorry I couldn’t resist)
‘This issue has it all, it’ll make your cry, make you laugh, make you yell in the air going *^% YEAH!! I’ve said it many times…but, I don’t think I’ve said it enough…out of all the comics I’ve read…in my lifetime…EVER…and I mean ever…to this point…this one…this exact comic…is the best comic I have EVER read. Geoff Johns’ has reached the pinnacle of his writing career thus far with this one issue…which is saying something. Sciver and Reis pencils are some of the best I’ve seen, they add the extra kick in the ass to this issue.
It’s great, it’s wonderful, and is everything a comic should aspire to be. READ IT!!!
Ok..ok…I need to stop…but…yeah…whew….and I haven’t even read the GL Corp issue that came out this week yet.
A positive review…….seen some negatives run amok, but I think we are on the same wave length and I hope to get my issue tommorrow.
It was a great book, and a fantastic end to the surprise hit of the year.
